The oldest candy factory in the region.

The sweet story began in 1876 in Ljubljana, when the Schumi couple opened a small confectionery craft. From the humble workshop grew a well-known name that, for a century and a half, has united tradition, innovation, and iconic candies.

Foundation 1876-1905
1876

The beginning

A small Ljubljana confectionery opens

Franc Schumi opens a confectionery on Kongresni trg 13, Ljubljana. With his wife Josipina, they sell candies, chocolates, pastries, and jams.

1880

Early vision

First newspaper advertisement

Only four years after opening, Šumi publishes its first newspaper ad — a clear sign of a young brand thinking ahead.

1888

Female leadership

Josipina takes the helm

With Josipina at the helm, Šumi was already selling gum candies — decades before today's biggest global competitors were founded.

1893

Recognition

Gold medal in Prague

Josipina Šumi receives a gold medal for her products at an exhibition in Prague.

1905

Industrial step

The craft grows into a factory

The craft is officially expanded into a Factory of Candies and Confectionery Products

Production

400 tones per year

With 30 employees, the factory produces 400 tonnes of candies and sweets per year.

1964

Modernization

Machines replace manual labour

Modernization ends the era of manual labour. The Gorenjka chocolate factory merges with Šumi.

1968

Television & legends

Visoki C is born

First TV ad airs in 1967. A year later, Visoki C launches — the first hard candy with liquid filling in Yugoslavia, with an iconic Miki Muster animation.

Joining Žito

The Šumi factory joins the Žito Food Combine

1981

Iconic brands born

Herba, Fru Fru, Šššum

Šumi launches several beloved products: Herba herbal candies (1971), Fru Fru fruit caramels (1980), and Šššum apple candies with powder filling (1981).

Modern Era 2000-2016
2000

Standards

First HACCP in Slovenia

Šumi merges with Imperial Krsko and becomes the first company in Slovenia to receive the HACCP certificate for food safety.

2008

New home

Move to Krsko

Production moves from Ljubljana to Krsko. Joint venture Šumi bonboni d.o.o. established with German partner Hitschler.

2016

Šumi family era

140 years & Podravka Group

The new look of Šumi candies with the new "Šumi family" communication platform is introduced in 2014. Two years later, Šumi celebrates 140 years and joins the Podravka group.

Today Šumi and Gorenjka unite the tradition of two of the most beloved Slovenian confectionery brands, stepping together onto the path of new shared growth.
